Update: it’s been over three hours since I started trying to rotate my wheels, but I finally have two slightly-larger sockets, and plenty of new lug nuts. Time for round two!

Kinja'd!!!

It ’s finally the weekend, so after I finished housework I went out to rotate the Volvo’s tires. Unfortunately the lug nuts are in such bad shape that I’m stuck now, so I need some advice. Help!

The portly nut

My main problem is that one of the lug nuts has swelled somehow, enough that it no longer fits in any of my sockets (19mm or 3/16”). Is there any trick, or do I need to go get a 20mm or 7/32” socket? Should I look for hex or triple square?

My secondary problem is that one of the other nuts that was also a bit bigger got stuck in the shallow triple square socket I had to use instead of the deep hex one, and now I’m not sure how to separate them. Does hot water get you enough thermal expansion, or do you need a torch?

Get a 20 MM, or BFH, slam sockets on, and replace the lugs.

I mean either way I would replace them, if they’re old, and swollen.

As far as separating them, you could try and heat the socket area with a torch and see if it falls out, I don’t know that hot water would be enough heat to separate, but worth a shot.

I’ve used a sacrificial bolt, or nut to hold the thing while I wrestle it out, if you have a vise, and the lug is a bolt, put the threaded in the vise and just wiggle with all your might, it should pop off.

Yeah they will def be replaced.

Thanks for the suggestions! I do have a big mallet, so I’m gonna go get me a deep 20 mm hex  socket and lots of new lug nuts.

Rats.

Also, your first tag speaks to me on a deep, deep level. Remind me to tell you how a break job turned into 8 weeks of non-running Miata sadness a few years ago

Get something to use as a lube as well so you can make a better attempt at getting them out, and maybe even a little MAP gas torch. They come in handy pretty often.
Best of luck

I’ve been using WD-40. I also have silicone spray, and some other crap. Is there anything in particular you recommend?

Torches do seem to come up a lot so I should probably get one.

Thanks!

What I did with mine was what Nick recommended...sledgehammer, lube, impact sockets, and new lugs.

Next size up from 19mm (by a hair) is 3/4", then 20mm, then 13/16"... If you try to go larger than that, you’ll probably just round the nut off. They als o make 18.5 and 19.5mm sockets for this sort of thing...

But if you can’t get it with a socket, w hatever you do, DO NOT desperately hack/ cut the wheel itself. If you have to destroy something, destroy the stud via drilling. A new stud & nut is cheap and (most like ly) easy to replace.

I would go with a silicone spray, that should do well enough to let them slip out if possible.

And yeah, I got a set of torches, and every time I touch my car they come in handy, even if its just a little MAP torch, it can get hot enough to dislodge or free up some stuff, or shit even just light something ablaze for the fun of it.

To remove the stuck lugnut  from the socket put the socket in a vice insert a screwdriver in the square drive hole and smack that with a hammer.

It's a cap on the lugnut. Smack the 19mm on there with a hammer.

looks like the really stupid idea of covering base metal with a thin chrome skin, if they are you can usually split the skin with a small sharp chisel enough to get it to start peeling and work it until you get a larger and larger hole. eventually when you can get a small screwdriver in there you get it to split open and get the skin off. in my case this revealed a more uniform hex that will be about 1mm smaller than before and then get it off. this soon get old. i have a lot of die grinders and such and ground a line from the base of one flat over the top and down the opposite flat, i had four wheels to do
